Winter Cycling Shoes - Protect Yourself against Cold Feet
Why Wearing Special Winter Shoes for Cycling?
If you decide to ride your bike in winter, you will soon realise that your feet are cold: Cold feet can really spoil the fun of cycling. So the question is: What to do?
Winter cycling shoes have specific features that prevent your feet from cooling down. Wind- and waterproof cycle shoes are decisive factors, as is thicker insulation with a warming inner lining. A higher cut shaft prevents water from penetrating from above and also closes the gap between the shoe and the bib tight. The sensitive cold bridge of the pedal connections is optimally insulated in winter road cycling shoes as well as winter mtb boots, so that neither cold can penetrate nor heat can be lost here.
If you simply get cold more quickly or want to sit on your bike from morning to night in winter, you can also increase the warming effect of your winter cycling shoes with thermal insoles, thick socks and neoprene overshoes. In general, the lower the temperature, the more insulation you should give your feet.
There is now a wide range of different models to choose from. Whether MTB shoes, road bike winter shoes or specific models for women - with us you are guaranteed to find the right cycling shoes for winter.
Why You Should Pay Attention to the Sole?
In summer as well as in winter, the sole of your road bike shoes or MTB boots plays a particularly important role in ensuring optimum stability and direct power transmission. For your winter cycling shoes, you therefore have a choice of different stiff soles:
- Flexible rubber sole: provides maximum grip, wearing comfort and flexibility when walking and is therefore ideally suited for MTB winter boots.
- hard nylon sole: ensures better power transmission thanks to greater stiffness. For grip on loose ground, MTB shoes are equipped with rubber tread blocks.
- Carbon composite sole: optimal compromise combining the stiffness of a carbon sole with the flexibility of a nylon sole.
- Extremely stiff carbon sole: offer even more stiffness for optimal power transfer to the pedals.
By the way: Like most cycling shoes, winter boots are mostly designed for use with clipless pedals. When choosing your shoes, make sure that the mountings on the sole are compatible with the cleats and pedals.
Bike Shoe Covers and Socks: The Perfect Match for Your Winter Cycling Shoes
The certainly cheapest option is using thick socks inside and waterproof bike shoe covers. Overshoes made of thick neoprene create a barrier against the elements. For short distances around the block, over the house trail or commuter rides, this variant is quite sufficient, but is probably always a compromise: Summer shoes, which are usually bought to fit, often do not offer enough space for sufficiently thick socks, and a lot of heat is lost via the cleat openings, as this area does not have enough insulation. If you really want to have long-lasting warm feet so that you can also spend extensive tours on your bike in winter, you should not shy away from investing in special winter cycling shoes. It is definitely one that will pay off.
