This book provides a comprehensive overview of the field of ultramarathon running. In addition to the history of ultramarathon, the German and international federations and championships are briefly presented as an introduction.
Subsequently, selected national and international running events are described. In the main section, amateur athletes and ambitious runners are given competent instructions that enable them to carry out structured training for ultra distances. Plans for 50 km, 100 km, 24-h and stage races are presented.
In this 3rd edition, guidance and training plans for 6-hour runs, 12-hour runs, and ultra-distances (trail running) have been added. Runners will learn what they need to do to accomplish these feats. Among other things, it is shown that the training effort is also possible for interested marathon runners and is not that far away from good marathon training.
Information on proper nutrition, orthopedic problems, typical ailments of ultrarunners, and mental training provide optimal preparation for an ultrarun. Finally, advice on equipment is given. Further reading and useful links can also be found at the end of the book.
In addition to training, the book also introduces the reader to the fascination of this sport and brings the scene to life with 10 portraits of important runners and selected running stories with all their facets.
