Down - Forty years of experience with quality down
For over 40 years, Fjällräven has used down as an insulating material. Only down that meets the highest quality standards is used. This ensures that Fjällräven down jackets and sleeping bags offer unbeatable insulation in relation to their weight. You'll also notice how well the down products compress to keep pack size to a minimum.
Fill Power/CUIN:
High quality down products are often rated by their fill power or bulk. Fill power is a measure of loft or "fluffiness." It indicates the volume in cubic inches that an ounce (27.3 grams) of down occupies. This is referred to as CUIN (cubic inches per ounce) or fill power or bulk. The higher the value, the better the insulation. A down product with a higher fill power will weigh less and be more compressible than a similarly warm product made from lower quality down.
Mix of down and feathers:
Another factor that is critical to the properties of down sleeping bags, jackets or other garments is the mix ratio of down and feathers. Down binds more air than feathers and insulates better. The higher the proportion of down, the better the insulating capacity for the same weight. For example, the value "90/10" means that 100 grams of filling material contains 90 grams of down.
Main features of down: although down is a natural product, it is still the best insulating material commercially available. They are also extremely lightweight and garments made from down can often be compressed into a small pack size.
Origin of down:
The high-quality down used in Fjällräven clothing and equipment comes from the food industry and is tested according to US standards. Fjällräven has only one down supplier with whom they have a close, active dialogue throughout the entire extraction process. The supplier has signed Fjällräven's Code of Conduct, which among other things regulates animal welfare. It has also signed an agreement prohibiting the live plucking of birds. The down process is constantly monitored through pre-organized as well as unannounced visits by Fjällräven's quality assurance team.
