The new Rohloff plug pinions enable fast gear changing without the sprocket tool.
It is only a plug pinion adapter (Splined Carrier) required (available separately). The sprocket tool is only necessary for mounting the Splined Carrier.
The Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 comes fitted with a 16 tooth reversible pinion. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 21 tooth reversible pinions are available as alternatives. The plug pinions are compatible to all versions of the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14.
Hereby, an individual sprocket/chainring combination can be applied. All pinions are reversible, and therefore, can be used from both drive sides.
A pinion with 13 teeth is for the use of the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 on small wheeled bicycles (eg 20", folding bikes and recumbent bikes).
The new plug pinions uses a different chain line (58mm instead of 54mm) and are reversible. When using a Rohloff chain tensioner on frames with dropouts thinner than 5mm, the longer chain tensioner mounting bolt must be ordered separately.
Note: In order to prevent damage to the hub derailleur do not use a chainring/cog ratio of less than 1.9. The smallest allowed chainring/cog ratios are: (single rider up to 100kg): 40/21, 36/19, 34/18, 32/17, 30/16, 28/15, 28/14 und 26/13.
The lowest gear of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 corresponds to the 22/40 ratio of a derailleur gear system. Larger Chain rings can be used without restrictions.
For tandem use or persons weighing more than 100 kg, the following chain ratios (factor 2.5) must not be undercut: 53/21, 48/19, 45/18, 42/17, 40/16, 38/15, 36/14 and 34/13.
Attention: It is mandatory to use a plug pinion adapter (separately available Splined Carrier). A sprocket tool is only necessary for mounting the Splined Carrier. The pinion itself can be changed without sprocket tool.
