With the mechanical 12-speed components of the 105 series, Shimano offers a shifting system for the most diverse types of road cyclists. However, the ST-R7120 shift/brake levers are not only characterized by the fast and intuitive shifting quality typical of the series, but also know how to convince on an ergonomic level thanks to improved grip and optimized comfort features.

A wide-ranging evaluation of different hand shapes and sizes has resulted in a modified grip positioning and a revised brake lever and clamp design. These adjustments have reduced the distance between the grip body and the brake lever, which in turn improves the leverage and provides more control with less effort. In addition, the brake/shift lever for 2x12-speed drivetrain systems is adjustable in reach.

Shimano 105 BR-R7170 disc brake caliper

Thanks to the natural deceleration feel of the hydraulic Shimano BR-R7170 brakes, athletes can test their limits even further. While their flat profile makes the Flatmount disc brake calipers ideal for use on road bikes, a 10 % larger pad spacing compared to the previous model reduces the risk of unwanted brake friction and grinding brake discs. This reduces overall noise during deceleration, but without compromising braking performance. On the contrary, the BR-R7170 calipers not only grip quickly, but also reliably.

Dual Control Lever (DCL) | The Shimano DCL levers combine braking and shifting functions in one control unit for easy as well as comfortable operation. In raising the standard of performance, their innovative ergonomics are even more important to consider than adding additional gearing. However, the highlight of the STI shifters (Shimano Total Integration) shifters, is the ability to change gears front and rear with just one finger. The Dual Control levers owe this not only to an extremely precise and smooth operation, but also to the same stability for which Shimano's MTB technologies are already known.

Ice Technologies | In order to keep the braking power at longer continuous operation consistently high, Shimano has developed the Ice-Tech cooling technology for brake discs and brake pads. Brake pads with Ice Technologies feature cooling fins made of aluminum, which better dissipate heat. In conjunction with the optimized radiation properties of the rotor, this results in a longer durability of the pads, while brake noise and fading are minimized.
