You can carry it over your shoulder, in your hand or on your back. The main compartment has a laptop sleeve with a padded bottom and a small zippered pocket. When not needed, the whole bag can be stored in its own front pocket. The outer material is waterproof, but not the zippers and seams, so the bag can withstand some wetness, but cannot be submerged.
