Vinylon F is the virtually indestructible fabric that has contributed to Kånken's legendary reputation over the decades. As a synthetic material - it is made of the fiber polyvinyl alcohol - it has a number of properties that are otherwise only found in natural materials.
Materials used for backpacks, such as polyurethane (PU) or silicone, typically require a coating to be waterproof. Vinylon, on the other hand, behaves like a natural material: when exposed to moisture, the fibers swell. As a result, the fabric becomes denser on its own and can withstand moisture. A coating is unnecessary.
