The Campagnolo Zonda is one of the bestsellers in the proprietary wheelset range. While it won't be seen under the bikes that will roll down the streets of Paris on the last stage of the Tour, it has become a victorious wheelset in other ways. It is known for its reliability that doesn't come with any reduction in performance. That's why the Zonda is often mounted on even top professional's training bikes doesn't seem out of place at all.
While maintaining all of the performance and durability characteristics there were incorporated the same improvements like on the Shamal Ultra wheels before. The goal was an even more efficient and performance-oriented rim, completely redesigned with inspiration from the growing trend that sees the use of increasingly wider tires. With this popularity of both 25 and 28 mm tires the wheel needs to be designed in a way to optimize the tire / wheel interface which is proved to be more aerodynamic compared to the same size tires mated to a C15 rim.
The new wider C17 rim ensures a more efficient shape of the tire, improving cornering grip and safety while reducing aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. A seemingly small increase in width offers a surprisingly different riding experience. The structural optimization ensures furthermore a surefooted grip on clincher tires as well as a better braking feel.
There is a long list of innovative technologies the Campagnolo Zonda C17 features, such as a differentiated rim height,
G3™ spoke pattern, the
MoMag™ technology, oversized driveside aluminium flange, aerodynamic spokes, cup and cone bearings and
RDB™ (Rim Dynamic Balance). In addition there happened a precision milling to eliminate excess material and weight where not needed.
Technologies of Campagnolo Zonda C17:
G3™ geometry
Campagnolo has developed an assembly architecture which, compared with a traditional wheel, makes it possible to improve energy transfer, reduce the stress on the spokes on the right and increase transverse rigidity. This is achieved because in
G3™ geometry the right-hand side of the rear wheel is fitted with twice as many spokes as the left. The results are a better transfer of the driving torque, better lateral rigidity and a reduction of the stress in the rear wheel spokes. In addition the wheel's responsiveness becomes increased and even at a higher system weight there are no more wheel vibrations. Thanks to the oversize flange G3™ becomes
Mega-G3™. This solution allows the increase of the torsional stiffness values even more, to the benefit of the overall responsiveness of the wheel.
RDB™ - Rim Dynamic Balance
The concept is simple and elegant: balance the weight of the gasket, with an item of similar weight placed on the exact opposite side. For top models, this is obtained by a special operation on the section of the rim opposite the rim joint.
MoMag™ - Mounting Magnet
With the help of the patented "Mounting Magnet"
(optional) the nipples, once inserted inside the rim via the valve hole, are "guided" to the point of connection with the spoke. This simple but ingenious system makes it possible to have a wheel without holes on the upper bridge, but with spokes tensioned by traditional nipples. No holes on the rim means that the rim is uniform at every point, free from stress points or zones of weakness and for the clincher profiles no rim tape is required to the benefit of weight reduction.
