Campagnolo never ceases to evolve and the range of drivetrains has taken on a new sophisticated element: The 12-speed Record mechanical groupset is the iconic brand that has personified the world's greatest successes in cycling, in both professional and amateur races. The victories race bikes have achieved over the years with this groupset demonstrate the highest level of quality present in the processing, technology and premium materials that have always made it stand above the rest as a unique trademark product. With the 12th sprocket, a new era begins. Enthusiasts will be able to gain unprecedented levels of versatility on their bikes along with the quality and reliability that Campagnolo is known for. The Record 12x2 groupset project was started from a clean slate and all of the components were redesigned. Performance was improved but the dimensions remained the same so that it is compatible with the frames and wheels currently on the market. The range of the mechanical drive system is extended by the Record Disc Brake components. The hydraulic disc brake system offers power and braking modulability without sacrificing ease of wheel maintenance and shifting.Campagnolo Record Ultra Torque carbon crankset
The Campagnolo Record Ultra Torque Carbon crankset made of carbon fibre with an unidirectional finish guarantees continuity with the design of the entire groupset, whilst maintaining the
Ultra Torque bracket system on the steel axle to ensure perfect transmission of power. The 2x12-speed crank can be installed on any type of frame, whether or not it is being used with disc brakes because it optimizes the chain line on the frame with a rear hub flange measuring 130, 135 or 142 mm, without affecting the Q-factor that remains constant at 145.5 mm.
The innovative design of the outer chainring ensures faster, quieter derailing owing to the contoured pin. The symmetrical design of the inner chainring teeth allows improved stability with chain crossovers.
A greater use of carbon fibres at the crank arms with the standard double B.C.D. (112 and 145 mm) reduces the weight while eight fixing screws increase the structure stiffness. The varying number of pins for each of the three chainring combinations (50/34, 52/36 and 53/39 teeth) facilitates upshifting due to the optimised free strokes associated with each combination. The special drains on the inside of the outer chainrings improve performance when downshifting in dead spots.
Features and benefits of the Record Crank
- New design, same dimensions
Compatible with all frame systems, regardless of the width of the rear chainstay.
- Unchanged Q-factor (145.5 mm)
Both the dimensions and the pedaling biodynamics remain unchanged.
- Unidirectional carbon fibre crank arms, steel axle and aluminium chainrings
Substantial stiffness and excellent power transfer.
- Symmetrical inner chainring teeth
Fluid and precise drivetrain, even with the greater crossovers.
- Optimised design for every chainring combination
Maximum performance, always.
- Double standard B.C.D.
Improved system stiffness and reduced weight due to increased use of carbon fibre.
- Superficial treatment of the chainrings for a longer lifespan.
Ultra Torque
Campagnolo found a way to permanently conjoin the semi-axles of the bottom bracket to the respective crankset arms. This redesign made it possible to considerably reduce the lateral dimensions at the axle level and prevent annoying contact with the ankles when turning the pedals.
Assembly is simplistic: one single oversize bolt is enough to integrate the two semi-axles. With regard to torque transmission efficiency, this system is equally as effective as a single piece axle.
Furthermore, despite the narrow side profile, Campagnolo has been able to position the bearings outside the bottom bracket shell, resulting in greater axle rigidity from the increased axle diameter. This breakthrough was obtained by using an ingenious mechanical system derived from many years' motoring experience in the rotation axle and engine shaft coupling sector: the Hirth joint.
In short, this is a joint with self-centring and self-aligning frontal teeth located in the middle of the bottom-bracket axle where the ends of the semi-axles, integrated with the crankset arms, come into contact.
